KONAMI have acquired the rights to publish the official video game of UEFA EURO 2016, taking over from Electronic Arts.
The rights battle is a significant blow for FIFA developer EA, who have published the official games for the European Championships since the 2000 competition.
KONAMI already have the exclusive rights to UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League competitions which it uses in the Pro Evolution Soccer series.
It represents something of a coup for the Japanese publisher as PES has always been lacking FIFA’s authenticity: since the series’ iteration they’ve been forced to use pseudonyms for players and teams due to EA’s stranglehold on the rights. Right now it’s unclear whether the EURO 2016 license will be used to release a standalone game or release a downloadable add-on for the main PES product.
Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director at UEFA Events SA, said:“We are very happy to expand our successful collaboration with Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. to our national team competitions. KONAMI is a great licensing partner and has provided top-quality video games for our club competitions for many years.
“We look forward to this newest extension of the PES series, created specifically for UEFA EURO 2016, further engaging with football fans around Europe and the world.”
Erik Bladinieres, European brand director of football for Konami Digital Entertainment B.V, said: “We are extremely proud to be working with UEFA around EURO 2016. The PES series is famed for showing football at its very best and is created by a team that truly loves and understands it.
“We are committed to representing UEFA EURO 2016 in a way that truly reflects the status of this epic tournament. UEFA EURO 2016 is a stunning gathering of European talent and we are committed to producing the definitive representation of top-level football.”
This year’s competition will be the first time 24 nations have taken part, representing almost half of the 54 nations that are eligible to qualify.

Old topic I know, but EA could of easily made up for Euro 2012's failure. Like they sort of did with Fifa Street 3, as the 4th was an improvement.
