What is WWE All Stars?

WWE All Stars is THQ's new wrestling game -- but it's not another WWE SmackDown vs. Raw. Here, the action is super-arcadey and over the top with moves that launch opponents dozens of feet into the air. The roster is comprised of current WWE Superstars and WWE Legends of yesteryear that look like oversized action figures.

Who is in it?

Thirty WWE wrestlers make up the roster. Legends range from Hulk Hogan to Eddie Guerrero. The Superstars include the likes of Triple H and Kofi Kingston. Non-playable folks are in the game as well, and DLC is coming later.

How does it play?

Like we said, it's arcadey. There are strikes, grapples and blocks along with traditional health meters and finisher meters. It's easy to jump into, but there's a lot of depth when it comes to the reversal system and timing your attacks.

What are the match types?

So far, THQ has confirmed a few matches. Tornado Tag matches have two two-man teams in the ring at the same time, while a Fatal 4 Way means it's every man for himself. Weapon-based contests are known as Extreme Rules matches. Elimination matches continue until one man is left standing, and Steel Cage matches go until one competitor escapes.

Are there any cool modes you know about?

Fantasy Warfare is by far the coolest mode we've seen in WWE All Stars. Here, Superstars are paired with Legends and battle for a certain title such as "Biggest Superstar" or "Greatest Warrior." That's all well and good, but what makes this awesome is the classic WWE footage THQ dug up and edited together to make some really, really slick packages that setup the fake feuds.

Is there multiplayer?

Of course there is. WWE All Stars supports four-player local and online matches.

Is there a creation mode?

Yup, you'll be able to create your own pumped up Superstar. You can adjust mouths, body shapes, and shoulders. THQ says that the mode packs all sorts of clothing options including more than 100 top and bottom designs. You can borrow a real character's move set and change the finisher, but that's as far as the move tweaking goes. There's no create an entrance, so you'll have to use an existing one. It looks OK, but it's not crazy detailed.

How's it looking?

Really good. We've been impressed with the game since we took a deep dive with it, but even more recent previews have led to WWE All Stars getting compared to WWF No Mercy. It's fun, accessible, and pretty. We can't wait to get it and kick the tires."
