The championship was first established on December 19, 2018, and the inaugural champion was Laredo Kid.

It was a championship contested over two seasons on its own Facebook Watch show, bringing together the best wrestlers from various promotions such as Lucha Libre AAA, IMPACT Wrestling, Lucha Underground, Lucha Libre Elite, including the main champions of AAA.

The AAA Lucha Capital Championship was retired on December 4, 2019, with the final champion being El Hijo del Vikingo.
