The championship was established with the endorsement of All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and Dory Funk Jr., president of the Pacific Wrestling Federation (PWF), the sanctioning body for AJPW's titles.

It was introduced to commemorate the legacy of Genichiro Tenryu, who won the NWA United National Championship twice before its unification into the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship.

The current champion is the team of Kohei Sato and Masayuki Kono (Kohei Sato & Masayuki Kono), who won the title on October 15, 2024, and has been reigning for 354 days.
