WhatCulture Pro / Defiant Wrestling was a Indie pro wrestling promotion based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, operating at a National level.
The WHATCULTURE PRO DEFIANT WRESTLING promotion was founded on May 25, 2016 by WhatCulture Ltd., and it ceased operations on August 1, 2019.
A promotion developed out of the cult success of the WhatCulture WWE/Wrestling’s YouTube channel, WhatCulture Pro Wrestling (WCPW) began as an innovative project blending the internet wrestling community to an indie federation. Incorporating the characters of the WhatCulture channel hosts, WCPW made the bold decision of running their weekly show, Loaded, for free on YouTube. Off the bat, WCPW hosted names ranging from local talent such as Joe Hendry, to international legends like Kurt Angle.
After the company’s honeymoon period, WCPW struggled with inconsistent booking, as it attempted to ingratiate itself within the UK’s indie scene. Because of the YouTube “Adpocalypse” of 2017, revenue from its weekly show declined massively.
When backstage drama forced the various WhatCulture hosts to resign and/or leave, WCPW rebranded to become Defiant Wrestling. Transitioning from super indie to a purely British wrestling promotion, the interest faded as it lost steam to other indies, the advent of NXT UK, and scandals affecting the top brass of the scene, before shutting down in mid-2019.
