The IWGP Heavyweight Championship (IGF) was a World Title contested in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and Inoki Genome Federation, by men wrestlers.
The championship was first established on July 15, 2006, and the inaugural champion was Brock Lesnar.
On July 15, 2006, NJPW stripped Brock Lesnar of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, due to his failure to show up for a scheduled title defense, over contractual disputes.
NJPW founder Antonio Inoki saw this event as an error made by NJPW, left NJPW, and created his own promotion, the Inoki Genome Federation.
Inoki also created this parallel version of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, with Lesnar still recognized as the champion, as he also maintained physical possession of the V3 belt.
As IGF was an NWA territory, the title was also recognized as the "NWA Japan Championship". The title also saw the involvement of TNA, which recognized it as the "IWGP World Heavyweight Championship" - while NJPW referred to it as the "IWGP 3rd Belt" but did not officially recognize it.
The IWGP Heavyweight Championship (IGF) was retired on February 17, 2008, when it was unified into the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, with the final champion being Shinsuke Nakamura.
