The inaugural champion was determined through a 14-man tournament at DGUSA Freedom Fight 2009. The title was the primary championship of DGUSA and was acknowledged by the parent organization Dragon Gate Japan, and has been defended at a DG event in Japan. Additionally, the title was recognized by the Evolve wrestling promotion.
The Open the Freedom Gate Championship was retired on August 15, 2015, when it was unified into the WWE Evolve Championship, with the final champion being Timothy Thatcher.
