The championship was first established on February 27, 1973, and the inaugural champion was Giant Baba.
This title was the Top-Singles title in AJPW under the administration of the Pacific Wrestling Federation as the governing body.
The title downgrade the world status when AJPW was affiliated to NWA.
The PWF Heavyweight Championship was retired on April 18, 1989, when it was unified into the AJPW Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship, with the final champion being Jumbo Tsuruta.
