The championship was first established on March 1, 1986, and the inaugural champion was "Ravishing" Rick Rude.
This is a newer version of the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship, with its own distinct lineage.
The WCWA World Heavyweight Championship was retired on September 1, 1990, when it was unified into the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship, with the final champion being Jerry "The King" Lawler.
