The championship was first established on February 23, 1996, and the inaugural champions were Chris Jericho & Gedo.
This title was the first tag team title in japanese pro-wrestling dedicated to junior heavyweight division. In the revived Tenryu Project, the title is also referred to as the I-J Tag Team Championship.
The current champions are Takuro Niki & Yusuke Kodama, who won the title on December 20, 2025, and have been reigning for 155 days.
