The championship was first established on February 23, 1996, and the inaugural champion was Chris Jericho & Gedo.

This title was the first tag team title in japanese pro-wrestling dedicated to junior heavyweight division. In the revived Tenryu Project, the title is also referred to as the I-J Tag Team Championship.

The current champion is the team of Yuya Susumu & Kengo (Yuya Susumu & Kengo), who won the title on October 15, 2024, and has been reigning for 265 days.
