The championship was first established on February 13, 1979, and the inaugural champion was Ted DiBiase.

This is a newer version of the WWWF United States Heavyweight Championship, with its own distinct lineage.

The WWF North American Heavyweight Championship was retired on April 23, 1981, with the final champion being Seiji Sakaguchi.

A similar championship, the WWE Intercontinental Championship, has been later introduced, which does not share the lineage with this title.
