National Wrestling Alliance is a Major pro wrestling promotion operating in the United States, based in Los Angeles, California, USA.
The NWA promotion was founded on July 14, 1948 by Pinkie George, Orville Brown, Al Haft, Harry Light, Sam Muchnick, Don Owen, Tony Stecher.
Founded in 1948, the NWA originally served as a governing body for a network of regional promotions. It operated a territory system where local promotions had their own championships but recognized a singular world champion who defended the title across all territories. The NWA was the dominant governing body in U.S. professional wrestling until the mid-1980s, when the expansion of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) diminished its influence.
In September 1993, World Championship Wrestling (WCW), the largest remaining NWA member, left the alliance. The NWA then became a loose coalition of independent promotions and granted exclusive rights to its World Heavyweight and Tag Team championships to NWA: Total Nonstop Action (TNA) from 2002 to 2007.
By August 2012, the NWA ceased its membership system and began licensing its brand to other promotions. It was purchased by Billy Corgan in 2017, and by late 2019-2023, it had re-established itself as a stand-alone promotion. In October 2023, the NWA reintroduced its territory system.
The NWA World Heavyweight Championship, once the most prestigious title in wrestling, remains a symbol of excellence and history in the sport.
