The championship was first established on September 28, 1986, and the inaugural champions were Ivan Koloff & Krusher Kruschev.
The NWA/WCW United States Tag Team Championship (Mid-Atlantic) was retired on July 31, 1992, with the final champions being The Barbarian.
A similar championship, the NWA United States Tag Team Championship, has been later introduced, which does not share the lineage with this title.
