The championship was first established on February 15, 2008, and the inaugural champion was Jake Hager.

The FCW Southern Heavyweight Championship was previously unified into this championship.

The FCW Florida Heavyweight Championship was retired on August 14, 2012, with the final champion being Richie Steamboat.

A similar championship, the NXT Championship, has been later introduced, which does not share the lineage with this title.
