The championship was first established on September 28, 1979.
The MSWA Mid-South Tag Team Championship was retired on March 1, 1986, with the final champions being Ted DiBiase & "Dr. Death" Steve Williams.
A similar championship, the UWF Tag Team Championship, has been later introduced, which does not share the lineage with this title.
